SAINT-DENIS, France — Quincy Hall of the United States showed excellent tenacity that paved the way for him to snatch the gold medal for the U. S. in the 400-meter event on Wednesday night. Hall, who looked like he was fighting for position as the runners rounded the last corner, moved from fourth position to the first and crossed the line in 43. It clocked 40 seconds, and this ranked it as the fourth fastest in the record of the event.
Hall’s triumph ended Americans’ gold drought in one-lap race since 2008, the last in which LaShawn Merritt clinched the title. His performance was one of the epic comebacks by the American athletes at these Games, joining the series of Hocker in the men’s 1,500 meters and Lyles in the 100 meters.
