Croydon Council urges vigilance amid rumours of potential riots

After some rumors were found circulating in social media about a possibility of riots erupting in Croydon, the local council has urged people to be ‘worried and careful’. The warning follows a statement posted on a social media platform directing people to steer clear of the city center on August 7 because of the looming chaos.

While there were no reports of protest activities, communities were still on alert

The council has averred that there are no substantiated reports of protest action planning within the near future in Croydon. However, they should emphasize the recognition of the communities and their willingness to report any respective activities to the police. ‘We are in touch with the police, and at this moment there is nothing suggesting protesters will be moving to Croydon,’ it claimed. 

Recent violence across the country

It was given when several brutal incidents occurred in the UK. The disturbances started after the nearly tragic stabbing of three young girls in Southport on 29 July. Even after the attacker deceived the population for being a refugee, the violence was not stopped. This situation has caused police officers to be attacked, shop owners to be harassed and glass house businesses and hotels to be bombed where refugees were been lodged.

In their statement, the leaders noted: “We, representatives of the four elected political parties on Croydon Council, are saddened and appalled by the events of social vandalism and lawlessness in the communities of the United Kingdom.

Prevention and control measures adopted by the authorities, particularly on hate crime 

The matters troubling Croydon came up in their statement where council leaders boasted of an impassive stance against hate crime. It was observed that they were proud of Croydon’s diversity which also embellished the brilliant, formidable, and mature ethnic relations in the area. “Our diversity is our strength and we are aware of how our people rally round when there is a cause to be made, they said. 

Community resilience and support

The council stressed people’s support and solidarity during such occasions. As per different surveys, about 78% of residents feel that they are included in the neighborhood and about 72% also stated that Croydon is the place where people from different diversity live happily. “This is the time for everyone to come together as one and defend our community, “reported the council members.

The council also encourages every person to seek police attention should there be any stranger or something out of the ordinary observed by the individuals. Thus, the threat to the safety of all individuals in the community can be prevented since the community is always on the lookout for potential dangers.
