When creating “God’s Classic Tape,” I Aditi Singh Tharran wanted to combine timeless astrological knowledge and mythological motifs. In this regard, this piece seeks to explore how these heavenly bodies and the representations assigned to them also help in understanding human life. The title “God’s Classic Tape” relates to this idea, alluding to the fact that these archetypes are eternal: they are God’s classic tape.

Astrology has interested me more as an analytical system that can tell the story of life rather than as a way to predict the future. Every sign has unique characteristics and galactic tasks widely associated with human feelings and experiences. Thus in personifying these signs, I intended to show their active processes in shaping our lives and to portray these signs as timeless. My thought process was to establish that these astrological signs are living entities which have not been left behind in the dustbin of history but are leading our lives as well.

The word ‘classic’ within the title is an allegory of ongoing relevance as is the ‘tape’. In the same way that one holds a classic recording dear because of its ageless wisdom, one looks to the archetypes in astrology and remains relevant through the ages. It gives a way through which one can be able to understand the self and the world thus being useful in giving direction in any given time.

Aries is depicted as a dream that is an enlightenment indicating that this symbol represents the spirit of the beginning, the active force. Aries is often considered the symbol of new possibilities and therefore I associated it with a spark to portray it as something that starts the process and pushes it forward.

Taurus is described as maintaining balance in the cosmos, which is symbolic of its properties of stability and perseverance. Taurus provides safety during the storm, which is illustrated by its stability. This illustrates the importance that Taurus has as the supporting and stabilising force, which is the importance magnitude for constant effectiveness and growth.

Gemini is depicted as a demon and an angel at the same time which reflects the duality of this zodiac sign. The strengths which Gemini possesses are flexibility and adaptability since it has two sides to its personality; the negative aspects include confusion and growing bored. The term Dengel was coined to represent this conflict of these two opposing aspects which characterized Gemini’s personality and its capacity to meld different worlds of reason and existence.

In cancer, love is weaved in revealing its gentle and sensitive side as befitting this sign. Cancer is explained to be able to generate feelings and care, by using weaving as an image as a result of the robust bonds it holds.

Leo is described as a golden twilight, which speaks about glamour and drama related to this zodiac sign. Leo’s natural method of leading and swaying the crowd as is demonstrated by the use of the golden twilight imagery which represents its brilliance. This imagery is an emblem of Leo, the light of creativity that Leo is now.

Virgo is illustrated as the light of the sage and as such, refers to the analytical and meticulous nature of the Virgo sign. This is the reason why light has been attributed to Virgo since the sign represents efforts towards attaining order and precision that are assimilated to light. Depicted here is Virgo’s ability to provide order and perspective to several aspects of life.

Libra is represented as a symbol of justice, as it signifies the search for equilibrium on the social level. This kind of judgment is portrayed to signify Libra’s balance-seeking nature as well as its capability to make sound decisions. In this representation one sees Libra trying to balance things, searching for harmony and trying to sort things out.

Scorpio is given the gift of the divine and is represented as one who has a secret to withhold as well as depths an individual does not want to ‘plumb’. It is also quite symbolic that the scarlet letter is the representative of Scorpio – the sign of intensity and transformation that is capable of delving into the deep and, often, the unknown side of life. This aspect seeks to show how Scorpio manages to come out of the hitches and show the world its sterling qualities.

Sagittarius is mentioned as the archer’s target and suggests the desire for travelling and the search for the essence of everything. Sagittarius’ position is the best summary of his/her character and/or personality since it combines optimism, the limitlessness of knowledge, and the striving to set higher goals. It emphasizes that Sagittarius is a Sign of search and journeying, because of curiosity and exploring.

Capricorn has been depicted as a flame on a rock, which represents the nature of the sign, especially the steadiness of the sign. About Capricorn, the sign of achievement of one’s purpose is indicated by ascension, possibly up a very steep mountain. This imagery is typical of the Capricorn’s constant striving towards success and the fact that it is possible to cope with all the difficulties encountered during this activity.

Aquarius is represented as an enlightening figure that fosters change and thus is symbolized by the future. Pursuing the theme of innovation, Aquarius is associated with change as the harbinger of humanitarian values. This representation points to the fact that the Aquarius wristlet is instrumental to the creation of the said future of a relatively enlightened society.

Pisces is presented as Ocean Dreams and Euphoria which defines the mystical as well as the empathic nature of this sign. On the front side Pisces is characterized by his/her Emotional Sense, highly developed Imagination is depicted as an ocean of dreams, flowing in free endowment. This representation highlights Pisces’ insight into the deeper and spiritual dimension of life, which may give it passion and creativity.

Thus, ‘God’s Classic Tape’ is a hymn for modern-day celestial archetypes that keep on enduring as classic entities. In the course of my project which contains personification and mythological figures, I have tried to present a new dimension to these symbols —I, Aditi Singh Tharran. Consequently, this work raises questions on how such archetypes manifest within our existence and how their importance is recalled as we follow our path across the Universe. Thus, this work attempts to combine concepts of astrology with art to make people realize that these symbols, being seemingly obsolete, are still significant and have deep meanings in the present world.
