Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder has underlined there will be no hidden intentions about the use of face masks and people will not be arrested for putting on the garment legally. ‘We are not going to arrest someone for wearing a mask,’ said Ryder. We are going to proceed up to the person and speak to him/her and discover. ”

Support and Opposition

It has resulted in a lot of controversies in Citizenship legislation. The proponents say that a mask ban is not only crucial for public safety but more so in dealing with the violent protesters who hide their identities and cannot be dealt with. They argue that the step will help prevent people from participating in legal malpractice since they will not be anonymous anymore.

Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County Executive who is a Republican, supports the law stating that there should be accountability in any public area. Blakeman continued to state that people should not be allowed to wear face masks to a level where they cannot be recognized unless they are sick or religiously obligated to do so.

Civil Liberties Concerns

Critics on the other hand are in a position to say that regulations violate First Amendment rights and health privacy acts. The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) has called foul over laws stating that this is a bad precedent to pass into law since the law will stifle free speech and be used selectively. Susan Gottehrer, the NYCLU’s Nassau County regional director also remarked, “Masks defend individuals who assert political sentiments that are unwelcome. ” It disallows the political freedoms and offers prospects for biased practice resulting in the monitoring, identification and subsequent threatening of demonstrators.

Prospects and Advantages

Thus, the Nassau County mask ban has entered the context of talking about public safety and civil rights. Mask mandates have also been contemplated by New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul for the subway in New York City but the governor has not yet made any specific move. Such a continuous interaction is a true representation and documentation of society’s struggle to balance between order and liberty.

Conclusion

While Nassau County is implementing this new legislation, the speculative discussion regarding it is going to remain an issue. Astutely, its proponents argue that it is a means to improve security and sanction governance while skeptics state its risks of over-policing and threatening freedom.
